My firefox add-ons keep getting removed/deleted.

Earlier today, I loaded up a fresh session and firefox loaded with about 7 tabs asking for permission to install certain add-ons. Some of these permissions were from my AV software (Avast) I noticed that two of them were add-ons I'd previously installed.

I closed all the tabs then checked my add-on page to find they've all gone.

I've seen the same reply to this problem posted a couple of times, but I'm asking afresh as the asker's problem didn't seem to be fully resolved in any of the instances.

Did you just close the tabs, or did you enable the add-ons first? If not, you may have to re-install those add-ons.

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.

Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.json, extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

New files will be created when required.

See "Corrupt extension files":

Hi, Fred. I closed the tabs because I didn't know if they were legit or not. Then I went to Mozilla's add-on page and re-installed the ones that got mysteriously removed/deleted.

The answer you've given is the one I refer to when I say I've seen the same answer given several times, but from what I can gather, it hasn't worked for previous sufferers of this problem.

That is news to me. These files, just like any files, can be corrupted. By removing the files, Firefox will rebuild them.

Well I shall try it if it happens again.

Thank you.

You you get such tabs that ask for permission to install an extension then you need to place checkmark if you want to install this extension and click the Continue button to confirm this. You can click Restart if necessary once you have done this with all extensions. This can happen with extensions that are installed globally like security software usually does. This can be caused by a problem with the extensions.* files (extensions.ini, extensions.json) or with files like prefs.js and possibly some others.

It happened again, but the only one of those extentions I have is 'extentions.json'

I've deleted it and will see how I get on.

Note that Windows hides some file extensions by default. Among them .html and .ini and .js and .txt and you may only see a file name without file extension. You can check the file extension (type) in the properties of the file in Windows Explorer via the right-click context menu.
