How do you one person's email address in several address books, e.g. Fred in relatives + team + jokes - without having multiple copies ?

I have 25 address books to separate 3 organizations ( one with 4 levels), work, friends, relatives, etc. etc.

I would like to have one address book, with perhaps a tick box for each address book !

This would be great as I would only have to update one email address entry per person.

It would also be helpful if Thunderbird, did not add an address to collected addresses

if the name and address already exists, or if it exists with a different @ddress, then query

whether to change or add it to the books.

Thanks for your help

Ian

I think you might want to look at using one address book and doing the grouping by use of Mailing Lists. But Mailing Lists are fixed. If you address a message using a Mailing List, it will send to all of its member contacts and not give you any option to omit specific members.

You have used an unfamiliar (to me) term in saying you're using "up to 4 levels". Thunderbird's address books are "flat" and don't properly support any subdivisions. What people often describe as a sub address book is a usually a Mailing List, but you can't nest them inside one another.

Our Address Book is old and creaky and in need of a makeover, but that isn't going to happen any time soon. Several of your suggestions would indeed be valuable enhancements. It is silly to have to maintain the same person as several different Contacts in multiple address books. But right now Thunderbird is in transition to independence from Mozilla and is faced with many challenging technical issues about how to support its ongoing development and what infrastructure is needed. A revamp of the Address Book is not on the to-do list at present. :-(

You can tailor, or indeed disable the addition of Contacts to Collected Addresses under Tools|Options|Composition|Addressing.

Thanks Zenos

I have used the wrong terminology it seems ? Mailing List = Address books ? ... and this is good as I don't always want to send a message to all the members.

Sorry for the confusion , with "up to 4 levels", I meant I have four address books for one organization alone.

However, it seems the solution is in the future...

Good luck with the transition.

Cheers Ian

Thanks again Zenos

Sadly, the choices are too limited, merely giving you the opportunity to save them or not.

And, If saving, to which address book...

. . so there is no checking against current usage.

Another one for the future, please.
