Both emails look very similar but I would like to hear from users as to how they perform and how you can customise them.

Can you have more than one email address.

Do you have to stick with standard folder names.

Are there real folders or just labels or views.

Can you forward email from another email providers account (yahoo.co.uk) to them and then forward the mail to Thunderbird (this is to overcome the Clientbug security problem between Yahoo mail and Thunderbird). I like managing my mail in Thunderbird.

GMX don't appear to have a user forum, what about Mail.com I love that I can post a question on Mozilla and receive a reply shortly after but always by the next day. The same applies to my ISP.

If you know of another email provider that works well with Thunderbird I would be pleased if you let me know. I use Gmail but I'm not enamoured with it.

re :Can you have more than one email address. Thunderbird can have any number of email addresses which are called mail accounts.

re : Do you have to stick with standard folder names. Pop mail accounts have a small set of default folders. Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Templates, Junk, Deleted, Archives. You can create any number of other folders with names that you prefer.

Imap mail accounts see a remote view of the folders on the server, so obviously you will see the default set as used by that server. Gmail example:, Inbox, Sent Mail, Drafts, Bin, Spam In addition, you can create your own folders. In the gmail case, they call them labels because all of the mail is stored in the 'All Mail' folder and you get a virtual view by applying labels which give the user an impression of folders.

re :Are there real folders or just labels or views. gmail uses the term 'labels'. Folders in the Folder pane are in reality mbox files which are text files. Emails are written to the file one after the other in the order downloaded. Pop mail accounts download to mbox files which are stored in the Thunderbird profile folder. Imap mail accounts see a remote view of subscribed server folders or labels if gmail. Imap can download headers and then upon selecting to open an email, download the full email to a temp folder (not in Thunderbird) to facilitate viewing. However, you can also choose to keep messages on the computer, in which case the full messages is downloaded and stored in mbox files, however, it needs to be understood that these mbox files are synchronised with the server. If you delete an email in an imap mail account in Thunderbird, it will be deleted off server. If you use webmail and delete an email, it will also disappear from Thunderbird because the folders are in effect one and the same.

re :Clientbug security problem between Yahoo mail and Thunderbird The usual reason for this 'Clientbug' issue is because yahoo has just changed the username, so update the username and all should be sorted. However, yahoo has had a spate of issues recently. See info here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1176610 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1168740

And on this one... http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=3032176 TLDR, FINAL SOLUTION: under server settings, in the username field, DELETE the '@yahoo.com' part after your email address. just leave it as your username only, without the '@yahoo.com'. This finally worked, and im able to do everything, with NO ERROR MESSAGES at the moment.

There is someone who uses gmx: Zenos quote I use gmx for both email and calendar. Both work well and reliably. I held off from answering because I don't know what to say in reference to your question about security. Gmx uses the industry standard TLS encryption for email. All I know about yahoo is that they persist in fiddling with their system and continually breaking things. I have no idea whether or not their recent broken attempt to add OAuth2 or application specific passwords actually provides any improvement to security. Given their breach leading to exposure of user logins which they refused to admit to for over 2 years, I'd say their security is not credible.

Toad-Hall, thanks for replying to my query.

re :Can you have more than one email address.

I meant more than one GMX email address in GMX in the one place to link to TB. I have a few yahoo ones but I manage them in TB else I would have to log in and out of each account in Yahoo to see my messages.

re : Do you have to stick with standard folder names. You have explained very clearly what I'm having problems with. I was trying to delete from a virtual view.

re :Clientbug security problem between Yahoo mail and Thunderbird This is why I'm looking for a replacement for Yahoo.

This amendment worked for me - after leaving it alone for a couple of days. My problem email address ended in yahoo.co.uk but another email ending in yahoo.com worked without a glitch.

Than you for taking the time for such a detailed reply. Sorry about the formatting.

I use Google Calendar in Thunderbird and it's easy to look at each time I check my mail. It's beginning to look like I will gradually change my main email address to GMX.
