in a reply to an email, how do i include the original email's complete header?

with the latest thunderbird version (60.3.0), the original email's header (in the reply) contains much less information than previously, ie:

On [date and time] [user name] wrote

whereas with prior versions, the original email's header looked like

     -------- Original Message --------
     Subject: ...
     From: [user name] <[email address]>
     To: [user name] <[email address]>
     CC: [user name] <[email address]>
     Date: [date and time]

how can i revert back to the more verbose header, above?

in a support forum post on this topic (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1188567) the "change quote and reply format" add-on is recommended for this. but the response when trying to add this to thunderbird is;

     change quote and reply format
could not be installed because it is
     not compatible with thunderbird 60.3.0

tx -- i may give this a try.

but it seems like there should be a way to simply revert back to the pre-60.3 header formatting. maybe the support people could throw in a config setting for this; i could be wrong but this doesn't seem like a big deal.

i'm curious as to why the old format was jettisoned. as indicated, add-ons can become incompatible with future releases.

I must admit that I never had the headers as you mention. I always saw On [date and time] [user name] wrote as per info here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Reply_header_settings

After all, the sender knows they sent it and they would also know to whom they sent it, so sending them their own information was perhaps considered as obvious. As a 'Reply' that email would also get threaded to the original sent email in a threaded view of conversation.

Maybe it was a very old setup from a while back. So I'm presuming you have been using Thunderbird for quite some time. To get the view you desire, it was necessary to acquire via an addon, probably created in response to those headers being changed a while back.

Open Tools/Options/Advanced/General/Config. editor and double-click the preference extensions.strictCompatibility to false, OK to close Options. The 'change quote and reply format' add-on will work after a TB restart if it is enabled.

Have you tested that? If so perhaps Paolo would bump the MaxVersion to 60.* if we were to ask him nicely. Offering an assurance it has been tested.

my reluctance to use the add-on has increased with the requirement to change the compatibility mode setting. also, as suggested above, i'm starting to think that maybe the old reply format is unnecessary. i'll try using the new format for a while.

thanks again for the feedback on this.

Unfortunately, while the preference switch allows the add-on to be installed, it is essentially inoperable as it disables the ability to even launch a reply. I tested this in a profile with only a few other (compatible) add-ons, so I don't think it's a case of one add-on interfering with another.

I had a feeling I disabled it early in the TB60 cycle because it caused issues. That is why I asked. I could not remember anything definitive however.

ReplyWithHeader performs many of the same functions. I tested the 'Outlook Extended' style reply header (see picture) in TB 60.3/W10.
