I'm using XP with Firefox 19. Neither of the search boxes work, and since I followed advice to reset Firefox to default I have no search engines available other than Google.

Search is working fine with Chrome

So, what's wrong here?

NOTE - Windows cannot open this file: troubleshooter.xpi

In order to change the default search engine or the order of search engines in the top right search box in Firefox, please perform the following steps:

  1. Move the mouse cursor inside the search box at the top right of the Firefox window and click the down arrow next to the provider's logo.
  2. If you would like to select another search engine, simply pick the engine from the dropdown list.

In order to change the order of the search engines, do this:

  1. From the dropdown list, select Manage Search Engines....
  2. In the upcoming window, you have all your search engines listed. To change the order, simply click one search engine and then select Move up or Move down from the buttons on the right side in order to change the order of the search engines.

Search does not work. Not at all.

There are NO search engine options in the 'Manage Search Engine' option list. Not even my default of Google. If I put text into the search window and click, nothing happens.

Using search on the Firefox home page does not work either.

You can check if you still have the XML files of the default search engines including Google in the searchplugins folder in the Firefox program folder.
If not then you need to reinstall Firefox.

Try to delete the search.json file and a possible search.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder

Thanks cor-el I deleted the search.sqlite and search.json files from profile yesterday to no effect. On firing up this morning I found the search window live and working. Seems strange as I'd restarted the pc several times thru' the day yesterday.

You could probably explain it but I can't. Many thanks for the help and advice, I appreciate that. Using Firefox alongside Chrome does not bring peace and happiness! :-)

Thanks again. DB.
