When I type " about:preferences#applications<enter> " in the address bar, I see a list with applications and the way Firefox handles these types of files. I need to introduce a new type of applications: " CAP Capella scorewriter file " and the instruction to Firefox has to be " Open with Capella.exe " .

"Open a *.cap file from Internet and tell Firefox what to do" does not work while Firefox opens the file directly as if it was a kind of textfile.

Hello,

Try download the file and when the popup comes up asking an action check the box with the option Do this automatically for files like this from now on.

Edit: I was forging select what program should open that kind of file. Also:

Are you able to select the option other and then browse to capella.exe and select that.
