keep trying to install latest version of firefox, looks like it has installed but on checking find it hasn't (Mac)

On loading Firefox - advised to update to latest version 39, current one is 35.0.1. Downloads OK. Appears to install, move to Applications as instructed - replacing existing copy. Relauch and I find I am still using version 35.0.1. Running on Mac with OS X version 10.9.5

these are the instructions that i followed originally - they did not resolve the issue.

Something may be blocking the install.

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking.

Starting The Computer In Safe Mode;
Free Online Encyclopedia

Then run the installer.
