We had a hard drive failure a couple of days ago and this required having a new hard drive installed. Some information was retrievable from the old hard drive and put back onto the new hard drive. However I am not sure if it is possible to retrieve our Thunderbird email program. Is that in anyway possible or do we have to start again by downloading thunderbird and starting from scratch ?

Do a search for a file called profiles.ini - if you have that, there is a chance that you have at least some of your data. This file may be set to be hidden so you may need to enable viewing of hidden files.

You don't need to recover the Thunderbird program itself. You just download it from the web and install it.
