Yes, I can't remember exactly how I got here, as Mozilla seem to do everything they can to persuade you to read FAQs instead of posting questions. However, now I'm here I'll ask the question I really wanted answered:

Until 2 days ago (when 55.0.3 was released) I used to enjoy the auto-complete feature in the address bar, where the suggestions only took place in the address bar. This was a well-designed, unobtrusive feature which I found quite useful. Suddenly I find that as soon as I dare to type a character in the address bar, my whole screen is filled with all kinds of gobbledegook I hadn't asked for and offers to perform internet searches with a dozen different search engines.

The only way I found to disable this horrid, intrusive behaviour was to turn off one of the settings in about:config (I only remember that it included the words 'browser' and 'search'). However, that has also disabled the primitive auto-complete facility I used to enjoy in the address bar. If I re-enable auto-complete I'm instantly back in the "screenfull-of-garbage" mode. Is this now an "all or nothing" situation or is there some way back to sanity?

Thanks to anyone who can help me here.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Now in the Reply Box on the forum page, do a right-click in the box and select Paste.

This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

...... and offers to perform internet searches with a dozen different search engines.

You can turn that new feature of :

Type in the address bar : about:config (press Enter) (promise to be careful, if asked) Type and look for the preference : browser.urlbar.oneOffSearches and set its value to false (default)

Let's get a little more specific. Normally the address bar has this behavior:

  • In the bar itself:
    • "autofill" suggests a matching site as you type (about:config pref: browser.urlbar.autoFill)
  • In the autocomplete drop-down
    • top line explains what will happen if you press Enter in the address bar right now (e.g., visit the autofill site, search the text using your default search site)
    • bookmark matches (can be turned on/off in Privacy options/preferences)
    • open tab matches (can be turned on/off in Privacy options/preferences)
    • history matches (can be turned on/off in Privacy options/preferences)
    • suggestions from your default search engine (can be turned on/off in Search options/preferences)
    • "one-off" search button panel [new in 55] (about:config pref: browser.urlbar.oneOffSearches)

Is that what you're seeing, or something else?

Thanks for the info on browser.urlbar.oneOffSearches - that's cut it down to half a screenful of garbage, instead a whole screenful.

Is this as good as it get?

I am avid Firefox user, supporter, and advocator. BUT since this morning Nov 14th 2017 the " totally rebuilt" version left me struggling. My bar under the URL bar with many hundreds of shortcuts is 100% messed up all my links that were set by use such as Gmail Yahoo News my own sites etc all gone and shortcuts that I recognize being mine are gone! How can I get my original one back? A while ago I had imported them to Chrome (that I use for specific social sites) How can I reinstate them back to this Firefox version. And this morning the Google SEARCH did not work for quite a while in the new Firefox. And OMG what is it with the mini page thumbs short cuts

(copied from Chrome) that I don't care for. Do we have to live with that now also in Firefox? Why do programmers always COPY others? It is so annoying. We love Firefox for its clean look, #firefox # rebuild #messup #problems #whycopychrome

Hi vicarious1, I hate to say this since you obviously spent a lot of time creating that post, but could you please start a new question? You can use this link, and scroll down past article suggestions to continue with the form:

The original poster might be interested in this bookmarks problem, but since it's going to take several replies to sort out, I think it's not fair to cc all previous posters in this thread with the new discussion. Thanks.

Here are some suggestions 1.) uninstall foxfire and then make sure there no other download or folders marked foxfire 2) reboot the computer and . I3) check your computer storage space (memory) then do a disc clean and finally reinstall foxfire and once completed do a final reboot . You may need to also once foxfire is reinstalled check click the menu button the 3 lines and check all your options

Here's mine. Firefox updated to Quantum and blows Win8.1 dual processor out of the water. Usage runs as high as 100% Here's a screenshot. I picked a dull website with no ads running etc. CPU usage spikes every few seconds and Firefox averages really high compared to Internet Explorer. Notice the regular spikes in usage don't correlate with disk usage so I don't think it's causing paging to occur. What has Mozilla done to Firefox to cause this?
