Thunderbird 68.5.0 (64-bit) on MacOS 10.15.3

In the last few months I have lost the ability to easily change the colour of text within an email I am writing. Yes, I am in HTML. The dialog box comes up, the picker comes up, but I can't seem to change the color anymore. How could you break something so basic? I got it some how to change to blue but I can't change it tp any other colour.

When you click the 'Choose a color' button, the OS X color picker appears. After you select a color, close the OS X color picker before you close the TB color picker.
