How to use custom icon on the New Tab page

The Firefox "New tab" page shows quick-navigation buttons. At the top right of each button, the 3-dot menu has an Edit option. On the edit dialog is a link "Use a custom image", which then prompts you for a image URL.

I've tried pointing this to images in my Google Photos (a 1024x1024 .JPG), using an open-shareable link, but it doesn't work.

a) What format does the icon image have to be in? b) Are there any limitations on the URL? c) Is there a way to use a locally stored icon image?

Any guidance would be most welcome! Thanks :)

Only http(s) links work, you can't use a file:/// URI, so you may need a local web server (localhost). I don't think that images as large as 1024x1024 work, so you may have to reduce the resolution to make this work, you can test this with various image sizes.

Make sure you have not disabled page thumbnail capturing, browser.pagethumbnails.capturing_disabled in about:config should either not exist or be set to false.

The customized shortcut is initially blank and takes a while to appear. Image size shouldn't matter since it is captured as a thumbnail, linking to an 8K image works for me.

Also make sure that you do not run cleanup software that clear the thumbnails folder in the secondary profile location (Local Directory on about:profiles).

Only saw this after a made a question about it. I guess we should then ask this feature as a suggestion. The icons take forever to show up. and i have not set cache to clean up, shouldn't the images stay i cache of something?
