Why won't google search box completions work?

When I type a query into the google search box, suggested completions are listed in a box which opens below. But when I click on one of these the list disappears and I'm left just with the characters that I've typed.

Known problem with the Google Toolbar extension.

If you use the Up / Down arrow keyboard keys, you can navigate the drop-down, then use the Enter key to select the highlighted item.

That's the best suggestion I have, short of the developer fixing that problem (and others).
