When I right click, select "Save as", then select where to save the image, it seems to download, as it shows as finished in "Downloads" screen. But when I right click the file on the "Downloads" screen, "Open" and "Open containing folder" are both non-selectable. If I go to the folder I chose to download the image to, it isn't there either.

Dragging the image itself to your desktop will save the file

It is possible that your anti-virus software is remmoving the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.
