I'm using windows 7 and firefox 18.0.2. On my PC I have my Admin account and my kids account. Now as they're coming to an age they're needing Internet access for projects and so on, I wonder if I can set parental control on firefox (by add-on?) as I have on windows, so that whenthey log on their account, firefox will only allow access to what I have allowed. That is, limit internet usage ONLY on their account, while I'll still be able to use firefox unrestrictedly. I don't want to have them use another browser that I' m not as familiar with just so I can set parental control on everything on that browser. Any ideas?

Chosen solution

It did the trick. One can restrict any program and/or browser to their liking. Although I don't like having someone else ( Microsoft...) do it for me, it works as should for now. Thank you for your time!

You'll probably need a 3rd party parental control software that works on different profiles for each user...

If you are looking for full parental control that records everything children do on the internet (such as Facebook) , as well as filters inappropriate websites, and does linguistic analysis detect dangerous activity - such as internet predators or cyber bullys - look into McGruff SafeGuard's Parental Control system

I do not use Windows often, so this may not be the best answer !

If Windows parental controls may be used why not just set up separate Operating System accounts for each child and install Firefox for them. Each then have their own individual bookmarks pass words etc.

There are some things on Firefox tat may be locked down but you also need to consider that they may circumvent by

  • installing a totally new browser
  • using a separate OS running from removable media
  • having access to browsers elsewhere
    Internet cafe or friends
    cellnet or smartphones

John99, I have set different user accounts for my kids and set parental control for them through windows regarding which programs/games they can access or not. But firefox is installed once and then is available for each user. True each can set their own bookmarks and so but is parental control available for each account?

I do not use Windows much but the article I linked to in my last post contains a link to this

I am guessing that works regardless of what browser is in use, otherwise it would be pretty useless. So I imagine it will restrict Firefox use. I suggest you set up a separate test account for your own use and try Firefox out on that before letting your kids loose on the internet.

Whilst any such software may help I guess the long term objective will be to try to educate the children and explain all is not safe and nice on the internet. You will not be able to restrict their internet activity to use of the home computer for long.

I would be interested to know whether in fact that does restrict and filter Firefox web access.

If you mean you want to block certain sites by some parental control software, you can try a web filter to block sites by URL or keywords. https://support.mozilla.org/zh-CN/questions/938721?esab=a&s=&r=1&as=s
