I have the browser set up to block pop-ups. It blocks the pop-ups from my bank even though I have repeatedly made that page "allowed" but allows subscription pop-ups on dozens of pages. Nearly all of these sub pop-ups force me to close them to see the page it hides. How can I actually block those annoying actions?

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Thanks for such a in-depth set of suggestions. Sadly, I did try them all and, except for Adware Cleaner that made one minor program unable to open (pikko for 8.1), the problem continues. Very strange.
