Why does firefox open a new tab when clicking gif controls?

I see a gif/video on a page, i right click and select 'Show controls'. Wherever i click on the gif/video it will open a new tab with 'about:blank' So im not able to change volume or skip forward. Already reinstalled Firefox and started fresh, also not working in safe mode.

gif/video is likely a MP4 file played with the HTML5 media player.

Do you have a Play item in the right-click context menu?

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block (wanted) content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block (wanted) content.

  • make sure your extensions and filters are updated to the latest version

There is Tracking Protection that can block (wanted) content, so check the location/address bar for special icons.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Hello, thank you for your time. There is a play button in the context menu. I tried all your suggestions but the problem does not disappear. I cleared cache, cookies. Turned off all plugins and addons. This problem started after i reinstalled Firefox about 2 weeks ago due to slowness. The slowness is gone but now this problem still exists.
