Hello. Firefox suggested that I update to their new server. Upon doing so, it wiped out years and years of bookmarks. Is there any way to retrieve them? Thanks.

Hello. As my windows desktop was 'acting slowly' in Mozilla's terms, they suggested that I upgrade, although, I've been upgrading all along with them. When I did so, upon the closing and reopening of Firefox, it wiped out every single one of my year's long bookmarks. I attempted to restore them through Firefox, with no luck and also did a 'system restore' on my computer, which provided the same result - none. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to restore them? Thank you.

You need to restore the backup file through the Restore menu in the Library window. Ctrl+Shift+b, then click "Import and Backup", then Restore, then "Choose file..." Please see the earlier link for more details on accessing the Restore feature.

Hi bedewieds, sorry to hear about this problem. It sounds like Firefox suggested a Refresh to speed up Firefox. This normally doesn't update your version, it clears settings and add-ons. When Refresh runs normally, all your bookmarks carry over to your new settings (new "profile") folder.

First, could you verify that the Refresh put your old data on your desktop inside a folder called Old Firefox Data? Unfortunately, using the System Restore feature can get rid of that folder, but hopefully you still have it.

If you have the folder, I can give you the steps to restore your bookmarks from there.

If you do not have the Old Firefox Data folder, what backups are listed on the Restore menu right now? This article will get you to that menu: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer. Anything recent? Anything that works?

Hi jscher2000. I do indeed have a folder in Old Firefox Data, but the computer states that it cannot open it as it is a 'JSONLZ4' file. Would you have suggestions?

Hi bedewieds, the LZ4 indicates a compressed file; it's gibberish to any program that doesn't know how to decompress it.

You can use the Restore menu. Instead of using any of the backups listed on the menu, click Choose file... and Firefox should pop up a Windows file browser. Use that to point Firefox to your desktop, into Old Firefox Data, into the old profile folder, into bookmarkbackups and then finally select one of the backups. Each has the date and number of items in the file name, so that should help in picking the most promising candidate.

Any luck?

Hello again. If you mean by Open File...in the Firefox browser, I do indeed do so. Upon clicking the bookmark backup folder - which I've attempted to do many times - I'm then prompted to open with (browse...) or save file. When I click 'open with' there is no 'firefox' associated in order to do so. i must be totally missing something here...
