I use Rogers.com email system which in turn uses Yahoo as its server. I have Thunderbird installed on my Windows 10 office computer and an email application on my smart phone.

Over the last few months, I have not received any junk mail on my office computer - I monitor the Junk in box frequently since I'm a published author and sometimes my readers' email end up in that folder - at least 2-4 each week.

However, messages from readers identified as "junk" continue to appear in my smart phone email app.

Two questions:

1. Is there an optional setting in Thunderbird which is inhibiting the receipt of junk mail. Perhaps it has been set on by default?

2. Once I have corrected this situation and Thunderbird starts to receive Junk mail in its Junk folder, is there any way of flagging this?

Thanks,

Dave.

What's the account type on both, the phone, and your office computer - POP or IMAP?

They are both POP. Dave

My best guess is the phone picks up the junk message first, and removes it from the server. Thus Thunderbird on the office computer will never see it.

When accessing an account from multiple devices IMAP is better suited than POP.

Hello Christ1,

Thanks for your thoughts. I think I'm going to have to convert to IMAP on my different devices. Incidentally, I was wrong - Thunderbird on my office computer (windows 10) is on the POP protocol but my Samsung smart phone is IMAP. To avoid any further traffic confusion, I have deleted my email app on the smartphone so my only Thunderbird device is the office computer.

My office computer has many folders going back at least 10 years. They are all important to my business so must continue to be able to use them for filing. I should also mention I had some problems with my profile a month ago but with help from the Forum, finally got it back under control.

If I change to IMAP, will I still have workable folders on my office computer and will I be able to continue filing messages to them?

Also, under IMAP, do I still have a profile? At present, mine is buried under Users -> Dave ->AppData->Roaming->Thunderbird.

I've looked for a tutorial about changing the protocol from POP to IMAP, but couldn't find one. If you know of one, I would appreciate you directing me to it. Before I make any moves, I must ensure that my working files are protected on the office computer and can continue to be used.

Appreciate your advice.

Dave

Are you saying your folder hierarchy only exists locally, but not on the server?

They are all important to my business so must continue to be able to use them for filing.

If local, do you want to continue to file messages locally? That would actually defeat the whole point of using IMAP, as you'd need to manually move new messages off of the server.

To me it would make more sense to upload the existing local folder hierarchy to the server once the IMAP account has been created. Even though this may be quite some effort initially, it would a a one time thing, and will pay off in the future. Note, an IMAP account on the phone would then also see the entire folder hierarchy. Please clarify what you're planning to do.

Also, under IMAP, do I still have a profile?

Yes, all your data resides inside the Thunderbird profile.

Before anything else, make sure to create a full backup of your Thunderbird profile. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

Then follow these instructions. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Convert_a_POP_account_to_a_IMAP_account
