Many of my bookmarked websites do not show the site icon. Only the generic globe. I've noticed that bookmarked sites that do show an icon also show a blue star in the page action area when I go to that site. Not so for the bookmarks showing a globe.

I have tried the following: Installing Cache Favicons for Bookmarks extension. Making sure the site address in the page action area matches the bookmarked site address. Deleting a bookmarked site and re-saving it. Probably a couple other things I read about but can't remember now.

None of the above helped. As an aside, this happened after I got a new PC with Win 10. My old PC was upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7. (Don't know if that would have anything to do with it.) After I installed Firefox on the new PC, it found my previously saved websites. All had generic globes. As I went to various sites, the icon would appear for some and not others. (Those other sites, I know had an icon previously.)

Anyone out there with further thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.

You would normally visit a bookmarked link to make Firefox retrieve the favicon. If you do not see the blue highlighted star if you visit a bookmarked page then this means that the resulting URL doesn't fully match including the protocol (http:// or https://) and possible anchors or GET data appended.

Do you see the favicon on the tab in such a case ?

Some page are not suited to be bookmarked since they may involve redirects or the server uses load-balancing or the link might be processed via JavaScript. You can possibly check this via the Network Monitor and make sure you persists the logs.

Can you post a few links that fail to load the favicon when bookmarked ?

Thanks cor-el. To answer your question; whether the star is blue or not, a flavicon does appear in the tab.

It looks like my biggest problem is the protocol. Many of my bookmarks have been around for a while and have http:// Of course, everyone is now https:// Changing that - and anything else in the address that's different - fixes the problem.

There is an exception. ssa.gov That's the only one I can confirm so far. The protocol and address are correct, a flavicon appears in the tab and the star is blue. That's as far as I've gotten. Thanks for pointing out the protocol as an issue.
