anytime I download the download box appears but is empty I have checked my settings and it is set to remember history and am not in private mode. I have looked up questions and solutions on Firefox help and have been unable to find a solution

First, try to reset Firefox. Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings. This simple step will eliminate many Firefox problems with only one click.
A few other basic trouble shooting things you can try is this: Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.
Update your graphics driver (Firefox uses your graphics card for some rendering, and an out of date graphics card driver can cause problems. Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL
Update all your plugins (Flash, Java, etc.): http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/.
Download and Install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, run a full Scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/. This helps check that there are no viruses on your computer causing issues. You can uninstall this program after you clean off any infections.
I assume that you also remember downloads?
- Tools > Options > Privacy > History: "Remember download history"
You can try to delete the downloads.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder in case there is a problem with the file.

Try type into address field about:config and find browser.download.manager.retention setting. If you do not want to clear your downloads it should be set to value 2. See more information here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Download_Manager_preferences
Note that Firefox handles the download history in the Library just like other history.
Removing a download from the (classic) Download Manager, either manually or via the browser.download.manager.retention pref, only removes it from that window, but you still see it in the downloads folder.
