Our Intranet uses file:// links to show pictures from UNC paths. The pictures show in IE but not Firefox. I have tried file:///// links too.
We are using SharePoint with a web part from another vendor that is used to display people's pictures. The web part takes in the paths we provide as UNC paths (i.e. \\servername\folder\picture.jpg\) and then when we open the page the links are displayed as file://servername/folder/picture.jpg. It works fine in Internet Explorer.
In Firefox 10 ESR, we do not see any pictures at all. There is not even an X where the picture is supposed to be.
I have tried changing the path so that the link is showing up as file:///// instead of file:// but the pictures are still not being displayed.
I have tried setting user.js as described here but that doesn't seem to work either. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Links_to_local_pages_don%27t_work

Try to browse to that directory and open such an image in Firefox via File > Ope File or Firefox menu button > New Tab > Open File or drag the image in a Firefox window to see which URL to use.

That shows file://///servername/folder/picture.jpg as the link. I have tried changing the source in Sharepoint already to this so we have the 5 slashes, but the picture is still not showing in Firefox whereas it is in IE. I am including a snippet of the page source - there is a lot more there if you need more, let me know! Thanks for your help --- the link is to my photo and is not showing up in Firefox - file://///seaspcontent1/employeephotos/KREIV.jpg

If the link is now correct, but the image doesn't show then it is most likely a security problem and you probably see an error message in the Web Developer > Error Console (Ctrl+Shift+J) about this.
Did you try the extension?
I have a problem like this... kinda... IT only does it in firefox.. here is an example..
TRY GOING HERE.... http://i48.tinypic.com/350m3ut.jpg
And it should show a page ONLY Of the picture.. instead it reloads it and goes to the TINYPIC website and shows the image with all these tools and crap.. I cannot properly do anything to do web designs and artwork designs to share pictures with artists.. properly.. because firefox keeps going to the SOURCE Page of the website that is hosting the PNG file.. NOT the actual file.. IT ONLY does this with tinypic.. I dont know why.. But Tinypic is the only image hosting website I have had trouble with... But then again it has never done this or had this kind of problem until I updated Firefox again.. Im thinking of just rolling back again :l Firefox has turned into a piece of crap with all the years of updates..
That is not a Firefox issue.
I see the same in Google Chrome.
If the image is in the cache then you get the image, otherwise you get the tinypic page in Firefox.
