When you e-mail a link in Firefox using Thunderbird, there is no prompt for password authentication when you have not yet started Thunderbird
When I start up Thunderbird, initially, I am prompted for password authentication before I can retrieve new messages, and I am also prompted for password authentication before I can send e-mail the very first time. But if I have not yet started Thunderbird and I send a link from the "File" menu of the Firefox browser, Thunderbird sends this e-mail without password authentication. Why? Is this a bug or a flaw?

Thanks, I have already posted the question in Thunderbird forums but no one seems to be able to grasp the essence of the question, which is: if the Thunderbird application is initiated by the browser for the first time in the instant session, why doesn't Thunderbird prompt you for password authentication?
i only use thunderbird occasionally and don't know much about its internals but i can only speculate that when you open thunderbird through a mailto-link from an external application it directly goes to the "create a message" window and the main window with your inbox isn't displayed, so the password isn't asked for initially (it would be used to bring the contents of your inbox up to date). that doesn't explain yet why there is no password prompt when you send your mail either. maybe the email isn't really sent, but gets stored in a outbox folder and will get sent the next time after you open the thunderbird application normally and have to provide the account's password...
The e-mail is not stored in an outbox when you use the "e-mail link" option in the File drop-down menu in Firefox. I have tested it. A copy of the sent mail is placed in my "sent" folder and the mail is delivered. If I were to open Thunderbird and then paste the link in the body of the e-mail and send, I would be prompted for password authentication if it's the first time I send an e-mail in the instant session. For some reason this doesn't occur when the link is sent by initiating Thunderbird with Firefox.
does it also happen with other applications that open a mailto: address in thunderbird as your the default mail client - i don't think this will be an issue that only happens in conjunction with firefox...
(again, it would be better dealt with in the support forums specialised on thunderbird)
I don't know if it happens with other applications. Firefox is the only browser I use and I don't use other applications that would open the e-mail client.
