I hadn't changed anything in my Gmail accounts or in Tbird when it stopped working. Yesterday I updated Tbird to 38 thinking it resolve the issue. Download still isn't working. I'm not using 2-step verification in Google. Any suggestions?

If you are using IMAP with Google, it may well be a good idea to change the authentication method to oauth2

This is a new connection method for Thunderbird V38 solely for Gmail (nice having a 10,000lb Gorilla in the room) which sidesteps all the issues relating to two factor authentication and access for less secure apps on the gmail site. For gmail it will eventually become compulsory, hence the inclusion of a web authentication method in a mail client.
