I use POP with Tbird and Earthlink. Earthlink has recently started supporting using IMAP.. So I think I have to create a new account in Tbird using IMAP and use my existing email address? What happens to everything that was in my POP account?

First try this: just create a new account in Thunderbird using the same email address and password, but ensure it selects an IMAP connection.

After it's up and running, you can move the stored messages from the old POP-connected account to the new IMAP-connected account, and then remove the old account.
