Since updating to firefox 45 and now 46.0.1, there are icons which appear to be showing as "hex" code. I have been searching and found several reports dating back a few years and all seem to be pointing to characters supplied by a font that is downloaded from the server. Have have tried this and it doesn't improve:

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

   Firefox > Preferences > Content : Fonts & Colors >
Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

You can check the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled pref on the about:config page and reset user set (bold) prefs via the right-click context menu to the default value.

I have also tried to restart firefox in safemode but to no avail.

I'm not sure what happened but all is well now. I tried both suggestions and they did not work. I uninstalled/reinstalled firefox as well but no good. I restarted windows in safe mode and icons appeared so I rebooted and ever since icons have been appearing normally. Thanks for the assistance!

Type about:preferences#content<enter> in the address bar. Across from fonts and colors, press the Advanced button. On the bottom, turn on Allow Web Sites To Choose Their Own.

You can check the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled pref on the about:config page and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value to true).

You can also check in the Web Console and in the Network Monitor ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Web Developer) to see if any downloadable fonts are blocked.

Make sure that your security software isn't blocking these font files.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen or hold down the Shift key) to see if that has effect.

It could have been a corrupt file that was overwritten. Please flag your last post as Solved Problem so others will know.
