Why can't my gmail emails come through, even when I try to re-set up the account in Thunderbird?

I've been getting the login failed popup box saying "Login to server imap.gmail.com failed." for weeks now, giving the options of retry, enter new password or cancel. Today I deleted the Gmail account and tried to set it up again using the instructions on Google's and Thunderbird's site, changing from imap to pop and pop to imap, whatever the instructions were. What could I be overlooking?

have you looked at the access histories on the google site. It might be you have accidentally excluded Thunderbird for access to the account, or you have disabled the "allow less secure apps setting which by default locks out Thunderbird when using passwords, or you may have enabled two factor authentication with gmail and not created an app password as required on their site for use with Thunderbird. The possible reasons are, as you have probably guessed, many. This is just the more likely.
