Google made me update my password, so I went to Tools/Options/Security and changed my password for my gmail account. I saved it in Password Manager. It is saved in both imap and smtp server settings. My old password no longer shows. Message says "Login to server imap.googlemail.com with username xxx@gmail.com failed." I didn't change any settings except the password. The new password works on Google webmail and on my iPhone but not on Thunderbird. Thanks for any advice you might offer.

Thank you, Toad! That worked. Google considers Thunderbird and Outlook as not up to G's security standards.

re : IMAP

Are you using Authentication Method : OAuth2 ?

If no - you are using 'Normal Password': Logon to webmail account using a browser and see if you need to select 'less secure apps' option. Gmail may have blocked you if they reset that option as not selected.

You solved my problem 2 months ago but it's happening again since I had to change my password again. I have my Google setting to allow less secure apps and still can't access gmail on Tbird.

Never mind, it seems to be working now. Seemed to take an hour to settle in!

This is third time I've come to the forum to search for answers on this topic. Every time I change my password in Google, there's a problem getting it to work in Thunderbird.

First the solution was "don't use OAuth2", then it was "Oh, no, it's okay to use OAuth2", and now again it is "change to normal password".

OAuth2 does not work at all if selected, for either of my gmail accounts. Normal password works for one of my gmail accounts. It does not work for the other. So yeah, this does get pretty confusing.

Here's an older thread in which Toad Hall says that a token will be generated if you select OAuth2 and no further problems should ensue: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1260907 . This is not the case.

(PS: Matt, don't bother answering. I don't need your pissy private messages. Thanks.)

jell: If you changed your password on Google, delete the old ones in Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords. Then, make sure you have at least TB 60.9.1 or 68.2.1. Use OAuth2 authentication for gmail IMAP accounts. If you add a gmail account or connect to a existing one, enter your new account password and proceed with the OAuth browser window (cookies for google must be allowed in Options/Privacy in TB).
