After a recent update on my Pixel 3a and also on my Samsung tablet, some pages are loading with the text truncated. This happens most frequently on Facebook, but I am also seeing it on news.google.com. Please see the attached screen shot from my tablet for an example -- the last line is cut off in the middle of the word "liquid". I don't see any pattern to it: sometimes the pages load fine, sometimes most of the text is missing, sometimes on the last line is cut off.

Hi

What versions of Android do you have installed on those devices?

Are you using any add-ons in Firefox for Android?

What level of Enhanced Tracking Protection do you have set?

more options

Hi Seburo,

The tablet has Android 9 and the phone has Android 11.

I am using Privacy Badger and uBlock Origin add-ons on the tablet, and only uBlock Origin on the phone.

Enhanced Tracking Protection is set to Standard (default) on both devices.

Thanks!

Hi

Can you try with the add-ons turned off?

more options

Hi,

I disabled add-ons on the tablet (Android 9) and the problem is still there.

I also tried to reproduce the problem on the phone (Android 11), but it's not happening today -- with or without the add-ons disabled.

Thinking about it, I've always seen the problem more frequently on the tablet than the phone, but I've definitely encountered it on both devices. I don't know if that helps narrow it down, but it's more information for you. I will keep trying to reproduce it on the phone and let you know.

Thanks!

Do you have any others apps open on the device at the same time?

more options

Hi,

I closed all other apps and all other tabs in Firefox; the problem is still present. I also noticed something new: it's not just truncating text. There are also random blocks that are empty where text should be, right in the middle. And the text isn't just cut off at character boundaries, sometimes parts of characters are visible and the other parts are not. Here's a screen shot I just took that shows what I mean.

Thanks!

Could you try with turning off the Avast! app that you have running?

I force-stopped Avast! and tried again, but the problem is still present.

Ok, thank you.

First off, please can you type about:support and copy the contents into a reply to this thread.

Please can you then install the Nightly version of Firefox for Android (it will not disrupt your existing install, no need to sign into your Firefox Account on it) and type about:config into the address bar and set gfx.webrender.software to true. Does this fix the issue?

I hope this helps.

Okay, the output from about:support is too big to paste here, so here's a link: https://pastebin.com/raw/YqAzVVj1

I also installed the Nightly version of Firefox, went to about:config, and changed gfx.webrender.software to true. At first it didn't seem to solve the problem, but then I closed and restarted the Nightly version of Firefox. After the restart, everything looks like it should and I don't see any chopped or truncated text.

Thanks!

Thank you so much for that information. I have contacted our developers who have recommended that I file a bug - you can see and follow this at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1723749

Feel free to uninstall Firefox for Android Nightly if you wish.
