Thunderbird does not recognize my email password so I can't download or send mail. I know the password is correct because it works with Thunderbird on my laptop (not updated) and if I log on the email server directly. I tried going back to an older version of Thunderbird but have the same problem.

Historically when I see that, I translate it to.

Thunderbird updated and my internet security suite/anti virus product (often Norton) has given up the ghost and blocked all the attempts this new software it does not recognize makes to connect to the internet

The result is failed connections which Thunderbird assumes are related to password and server settings, when nothing is further from the truth.

Software firewalls are the bane of software updates.

Now there is a new player on the block for messing with mail VPN's. If you have one disable it and see if that helps.
