I get a message that my versiob of FF is not supported by my ISP. It asks if I want "update". I do and it takes me to a download page. When I download I get a strange file that looks like it might be to generate a "tar" file. I am a Windows user normally and have no idea what to do with a tar file.

How can I update Firefox on my Asus PC?

Your user agent appears to be Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008102920 Firefox/3.0.4 so the www.mozilla.org page was serving you the Linux version.

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html and pick your language under Windows.

Though if you are really using Windows then perhaps you need to fix your user agent. https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Websites+or+add-ons+incorrectly+report+incompatible+browser

I must apologize for the confusion. I am trying to update my wife's Asus PC (a Linux based machine). I downloaded the "update" (on the Asus) and got what appears to be some form of compressed tar file.

I just have no idea how to decompress and then use the file to update the FF Asus PC
