What do you do if the automatic update doesn't work?

more options

Firefox is not updating on my Mac (10.5.8). I get messages about my installed version of FF, 5.0.1, being out of date, so I downloaded the latest, which is 9.0.1. However, the download is for a new installation, not an update of the existing FF.

If I install the 9.0.1, will it pick up the settings from my installed 5.0.1 version? Or is there some way to fix the "automatic" update so it actually updates the existing installation?

Thanks for any help!
