As I was posting the question above, I noticed that the forum submission system auto-detected various system details including a long list of plugins.

I went to tools>Add-ons>Plugins and updated a few and disabled most of the old and otherwise unwanted plugins. After restarting Firefox the ebay login worked fine and the browser started much quicker.

Is there a way to completely delete unwanted plugins?
