I have selected Microsoft Office as my default reader for docx. I have checked the "do this automatically for files like this from now on" box. Yet I still get the dialog box (with the automatic option checked) when trying to open word docs. I click "okay" and it works fine. However, I want it to open automatically. I have windows 8 and microsoft office 2013.

An automatic download action is tied to a specific MIME type and not to the file extension, so it is possible that you created this action on another MIME type. Different servers may use a different MIME (content) type to send such a docx archive type file.

The second reference seems to say that there is nothing I can do to allow these documents to open automatically. Am I missing something? Can you suggest anything I can try.

You can only set an automatic action properly when you save a file that is send by the web server with the correct MIME type for this file, otherwise it will likely fail.
A MIME type as send by the server will always prevail the file extension, so servers need to be configured properly.
