I don't want Bing to be my default search engine. I've tried everything and it won't go away. What can I do?

No matter what I do - I've tried reordering my search engines, removing Bing from the list all together, going to about:config and changing all of the Bing values to google.com, and even resetting Firefox - every time I reopen Firefox, Bing is still my default search engine. I would really like to get rid of it and have Google be my default and stay there even when I close and reopen Firefox, but I'm not sure what else to try.

There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Thanks for the detailed response! The malware check did the trick, I guess I had some program on my computer called Lenovo Browser Guard that was related to Conduit search. The malware scanner was able to detect it and remove it and I finally have Google as my default search engine.
