When I click on the + to open a new tab, I get the new tab page, which displays the previous sites I visit the most. No problem. But in the search window, if I do a search it uses Yahoo. I don't like Yahoo. I would like to change to another search engine, you know, one that's more obscure such as Google. Can anyone help me?

Side issue; Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

Look at the search bar. Do you see the icon of the current search engine? Click the arrow next to the icon. you should now see a list of your search engines. At the bottom, select Manage Search Engines. Now a window will open of all your engines. Select the one you want as your default. On the right of the list you will see a set of up/down arrows. Click the up arrow until the engine you want is at the top of the list. Then press Okay. Once the window is closed, your choice should now be displayed in the search bar.
