How do I enable Enigmail for my outgoing messages?

I just installed Enigmail on my Thunderbird. I generated a public and private key and sent them to a friend of mine. They replied and sent me their key.

They can encrypt the message with my public key, but I can't encrypt the outgoing message using their public key. On the top of the email it says "Enigmail is disabled for the selected user"

I have added their public key to my "key manager". I also added a "per recipient" rule for my friend that looks like it should allow encryption. Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong?

I am using Ubuntu 14.04

I attached a screenshot of the top of my email tool.

Just to add to this. This issue does not seem to be related to my friend or his key. If I start a new email it already says "enigmail is disabled for the selected identity". I assume that means that it is disabled for ME.

I guess my question should be how do I enable it for myself?
