When I first got this computer last year Thunderbird was really fast. I could open and delete in a second. Now for some reason there is beach ball that spins and spins for every action. Something changed and I don't know what.

The usual culprit is the antivirus software poking it's nose where is does not belong. Start your computer in Safe mode with networking. Does Thunderbird work better? If yes, read this article. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Anti-virus_Software

Also: - routinely empty Trash folder (right+click the folder and empty) - routinely empty Junk folder - reduce size of Sent and Inbox by deleting, archiving, moving messages, then do File, Compact Folders
