Thunderbird is downloading multiple copies of emails from the server. Takes up space. It had downloaded over 50,000 duplicated emails. How do I stop it?

Thunderbird is downloading emails and making multiple copies of them. It had reported 60,000 downloaded emails. Almost all of them multiple duplications. How do I stop it? I have been using Thunderbird for less than a month, with it working well. Then it starts doing this.

Please help me solve this problem.

Peggy

Outlook had that same problem in roughly the same time period. It did it for a while, and then it went away. I see it very rarely in TB.
