I had noticed that after uninstalling FF from CtrlPnl that it still opened when I clicked on the desktop icon. This all started after I was having trouble updating FF to latest version. I kept getting "restart to update messages, and NEVER ended up with 56.0.2 Hope this helps others.

Is there a problem?

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86)

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Do Not remove the profiles folder.

Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox program folders by adding .old to them. Do not rename the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

FYI: "If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop"

This method did NOT work. From this site's dnld, kept getting the SAME updating problem. Only after doing Uninstall process, and then having to delete Mozilla folder and then installing Firefox Setup 56.0.2.exe fom the Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link} was problem resolved.

That instruction is for Linux systems.

Thanks for your help. I guess the biggest problem I had was due to not removing the Mozilla Folder in Program Files after doing the uninstall. Not sure if instructions specifically stated this, but I feel maybe it should be more stressed. My original FF install (I was moving from 32bit to 64bit) must have had something wrong with the 64 bit installation setup. So, again, maybe deleting Mozilla Firefox folder from Prog Files should be listed as a Step, rather than a "you may have to".
