How do I restore Properties window?

I like to use the the Description field to add additional info to save in the Properties window when I right-click on a bookmarked web page. Lately, whenever I click on a newly bookmarked Properties window, it comes up blank! My old bookmarks seem to be fine and still display correctly, but any newly saved web page will not display this option. There are only 2 buttons shown in a small window when I right click and then click Properties: "Save" and "Cancel". I already tried the "Restore Firefox" option with DISASTROUS results (I'll never do that again!) Any suggestions on how to fix this little window problem? Thanx in advance!

Can you see this description field in the Bookmarks Manager (Show All Bookmarks; Library)?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Try to rename/remove the xulstore.json file in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

When you use the refresh feature in Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks and history, form data, tabs) is automatically imported. The current profile folder will be moved to an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop. Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.

You can copy files like these with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to recover specific data. Note that you should be cautious with copying SQLite database files if you previously had problems.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved form data
  • logins.json and key3.db (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
  • cert8.db and possibly cert_override.txt for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other Site Preferences
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs
