Why does the Thunderbird message window close by itself
Sometimes when I open a new email message window, the window closes by itself after a second or two. Also, sometimes when I delete a message I'm reading from the message window, or if I press the "Next" button in the message window, the next email message will open in a new message window and the new message window will close by itself after a second or two. I tried disabling all add-ons, but that did not resolve the problem.
Any idea what may be causing this problem?

This is where those settings have been set up. 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Display' > 'Advanced' tab
Sounds like you currently have these settings : Open message in:
- Double click on email in list to open email in 'A new message window'.
- checkbox is selected to 'Close message window/tab on move or deleted'.
Generally, I open and read messages using a single click and view them in the 'Message Pane' as this is so much easier and quicker. But for those more lengthy emails, for a double left click I use the option 'A new tab', but you can choose what suits you. If you prefer to manually close your windows, then uncheck the checkbox which auto closes on move or delete. When happy with your selection click on OK.
Thanks for your response Toad-Hall. I do have my options set to open email in a new message window, but I don't have the checkbox selected to close message window/tab on move or delete. Just to clarify, the message window only intermittently closes by itself. Most times when I delete a message from the message window, or click next to go to the next message, the message window stays open.
