When importing Bookmarks from Chrome, resulting Bookmark file is always empty.

I have done this before successfully but now, and the last few times, all I get is an empty folder when trying to import bookmarks from Chrome to Firefox. As I want to cut the tether to Chrome but want to save bookmarks this is important to me. I'm following importation instructions to the letter.

"Move bookmarks to another browser

If you decide to use a different browser, you can take all your Chrome bookmarks with you.

. On your computer, open Chrome. . At the top right, click More More. . Select Bookmarks and then Bookmark Manager. . At the top, click More More and then Export Bookmarks.

Chrome exports your bookmarks as an HTML file. Use this file to import your bookmarks into another browser."

Hi Mark, let's first verify the export: If you open the HTML file in a browser (either Firefox or Chrome), does it have the bookmarks you want to import listed out as links?

Next, in Firefox, when you click Bookmarks Menu in the left side of the Library window (Ctrl+Shift+b), its contents should be listed out on the right. Does it show an "Imported from Chrome" folder -- is that the folder that's empty?

Thank-you for your reply! You are correct--empty folder. And since you replied, I tried importing them again. I now have two imported-from-chrome folders, both empty. I have done this before successfuly. I still have a full folder from IE from back in the days when I used the IE browser. -Mark

If they aren't there either, I wonder why it's not working.

Is Chrome on the same PC? You could try the automatic import method instead of the HTML file method: Import bookmarks and other data from Google Chrome.

I use the Bookmarks Bar everyday. Chrome is on the same PC. I have been using the automatic import method. As I told someone else, I'm not sure how to use the HTML import method. Where do I find the HTML file?

This would seem to solve my problem--thanks very much. As it turns out, my problem with Firefox Bookmarks goes deeper than I thought. I believe my Bookmarks files are corrupt and I am going to uninstall and reinstall the entire browser to clean it up. I have found that I have several hundred single bookmarks in my Bookmarks Bar that are undeleteable--I delete them and they keep coming back. these may be from my attempt to import Bookmarks from Chrome previously. Instead of bookmarks in neat folders, I've got loose bookmarks in random order all attached to the top tier and it's a large mess.

Thanks again to everyone who helped me out here. I am going to start fresh, I think.

Hi Mark, you can test whether it is a problem with a settings file as follows:

New Profile Test

This takes about 3 minutes, plus the time to test your problem site(s).

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Click the "Create a New Profile" button, then click Next. Assign a name like Dec2019, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

After creating the profile, scroll down to it and click the Launch profile in new browser button.

Firefox should open a new window that looks like a brand new, uncustomized installation. (Your existing Firefox window(s) should not be affected.) Please ignore any tabs enticing you to connect to a Sync account or to activate extensions found on your system so we can get a clean test.

Can you successfully import bookmarks in the new profile?

I there's no improvement, you can close the extra window without affecting your regular Firefox profile. (Dec2019 will remain available for future testing.)

Note: if this test changed your default profile, use the Set as Default Profile button for your regular profile to set it back to normal.

If you want to keep using the new one, look on the about:profiles page for the "Set as Default Browser" button for that profile.
