Is there a way to change look of 89 to look exactly like 88 ?

Chosen solution

I was succeed getting rid of the super ugly 89 interface by 2 ways, the second needs some basic user skills but brings even better effect !

Solution 1

Do the following:

1) Open Firefox and type about:config into the address bar. 2) Hit Enter and click on I Accept the risk to proceed. 3) In the search box, enter proton. 4) To disable Proton UI in Firefox, set the following values to false:

browser.proton.enabled
browser.proton.modals.enabled
browser.proton.doorhangers.enabled
browser.proton.contextmenus.enabled

This will immediately restore the classic appearance of the Firefox browser.

WARNING: There are plans to remove this preference in the next two months The preference setting was created as a toggle for developers when building the new design. Now that the new interface has shipped, the preference will be removed.

If you have any issues with the new design, please let us know what it is you don't like, and we can try provide more permanent solutions depending on the issue.

Solution 2

1) Open Firefox and type about:config into the address bar. 2) Hit Enter and click on I Accept the risk to proceed. 3) In the search box, enter toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets. and set it to true 4) In the search box, enter svg.context-properties.content.enabled. and set it to true 5) download the two CSS files from the project's Github repository. Select userChrome.css first to display it on GitHub, then the RAW button to display it, and right-click on the page and use Save As to download it. The filename should be userChrome.css on your computer. Repeat the steps for the userContent.css file.

6) Open Firefox and type about:support into the address bar and hit Enter 7) activate the "show folder" button next to Profile Folder; this opens the profile folder in the file browser on the system. You may close Firefox now.

8) Create a "chrome" folder in the profile root if it does not exist. Place the two files, userChrome.css and userContent.css, inside the chrome folder, and start Firefox again.

The above will finaly change the new ugly and useless 89's interface noticeably.

MOZILLA developers, please listen voices of your users ! 89 is VERY UGLY and useless ! We like you SO MUCH AND SO MANY YEARS because you always were listening your supporters and you were care about us not as other junk browsers makers ! Hope the next change you will do to my favorite browser will not disappoint us as much as the last one. Thank you !

Hi. I think if you want to rollback to Mozilla Firefox 88.0 the only option is to download and install the 88 version. If you are using Ubuntu operating system, you can download a previous version from Ubuntu Software center. But I don't recommend this. Please check out this link. It says that : Warning: Old Firefox versions pose a significant security risk.

I had already tried this -> lead to notification of creating new profile. Then after installing and copying all content form old/after update (ver89) - does not work. I do not have backup profile with all my links/passwords add-ons etc before 89 update... so I`m really angry.

I hope Mozilla team will figure it out and give us option for old layout -> similar situation with Thunderbird few weeks back. Not all users like/appreciate new ascetic look. In my opinion: 1. Is ugly 2. visibility is lover 3. my work optimization is suffering -> i`m searching for things that where the were for years in one place -> now constant struggle 4. Just simple question before update If i would like to test new look or use old one -> why not?

I think that this will be new wave of user leaving Firefox. Fewer and fever would like to stick around and support/ donate If you don`t listen to community.

I had found some little tip in one of the similar topic .. but not all I want

You can use an add-on theme to help with the background color as a I mentioned to lee37, but that doesn't return the vertical divider lines. You can temporarily revert the tab bar style for a few weeks by making the following preference change:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.proton.enabled and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to switch between true (new design) and false (old design)

That was kept in for testing and isn't a fully supported mode, so some things might be a touch glitchy.

One possibility is the ESR (Extended Support Release) mentioned towards the bottom of the page in your link. That uses the old UI and is not a security risk (it's regularly updated with security fixes).

However, eventually this too will be updated with the new UI, so it's not a permanent solution.

V89 does not work AT ALL. Only blank pages when you try to visit google, yahoo, youtube.com etc - the most common pages are BLANK.

All extensions and PASSWORDS were wiped out! What a total disaster this 89 is!

Tried installing V88 and get the attached error message about the install files not being complete.

Mozilla has seriously ruined my day and making working during covid near impossible!

Is all your FF user data, pw's bm's history, a-ok in the new version?

@ stereodept

You can check for issues caused by a corrupted or incomplete Visual C++ installation that is missing runtime components (Redistributable Packages) required by Firefox, especially VCRUNTIME140_1.dll.

I've been a loyal user of Firefox for, oh, basically since it went online, yet unless this new version provides more compact information and makes the aspects of Sync that allow you to access your passwords ("Lockwise") able to continue - if selected - when only one device is on, it's a tremendous waste of my time. I rarely have more than one device going at a time! I installed 89 a day ago and I've already spent several hours trying to overcome all its helpful ideas of how I want to organize and use my devices.

I'm sure 89 is great at protecting my security, but I have responsibilities to others that prevent me spending my entire waking life overcoming computer issues caused by updates. I apologize to those of you who find the new format useful and desirable. It simply doesn't suit my own needs.

Well, in all fairness, FF is a work in progress. So it will never be perfect for everyone, although I have ideas on how it could be.

But you are not out of options and alternatives.

What would you like to do at this time? Do you want to downgrade to the previous version? Do you want to install the previous version side by side with the new one? Is all of your FireFox user data 100% a-ok at this time?

Thanks for your kind, supportive response! My biggest issue is with Sync. It's pointless for someone using only one device at a time, and I wonder how all the people who can't afford multiple devices are supposed to save passwords in a relatively secure form while they try to survive....

Of the choices you suggest, I'd say using the previous FF version side-by-side would be the best option for me at present, if you'd be willing to outline the necessary steps for setup. My sister uses my PC and has dementia, is clearly not up to dealing with a slew of new instructions.

Surely there is some way to access stored information otherwise. The passwords are sitting on my hard drive, but having to look them up and type them out is tedious. Yet Sync won't do so unless I make it possible for a second device to have access also, at the same time. Frankly having all my passwords etc. on two devices makes me nervous - I habitually don't use such information on my phone, where the company that built it downloads everything it can every morning (the sudden drop in battery charge is a hint).

Thanks! (Sometime I'd like to learn how to pronounce your username.)

It's my pleasure to help out. Let us first get you rolling again with v88. Afterwards, we can proceed with the next steps.

Incidentally, because the steps would only make this thread confusing for people, can we do this over email?

My public email address is databaseben@hotmail.com

If not, then we can do it on this thread. But I would like to conclude this thread easily after you are good to go. ~db ben

Hi again, ·´¯`·...¸>-)))º> ~dbben !

I followed your *excellent* instructions you sent me, and installed v88 after saving the old userdata on Edge and later retrieving it from there. The trickiest part was that I had Firefox's settings set to automatically upload a new version and so I had to slam on the settings fast before it got installed - though it did get downloaded. So then I went back and restarted the installation file (I'd changed the auto-update options in FF and in my antivirus package to "DON'T!"), imported my pre-89 userdata, and voila! everything was back the way it was.

I still have v89 on my PC, though I removed it from my taskbar icons and have to deliberately start it. That way I can check it every few days to see how it's progressing.

Give this Top 10 Contributor a gold star and my thanks for saving me from abandoning Firefox just yet!

Could you kindly share your method? Do I understand that you found way around by importing settings to edge - > uninstalling 89 and then installing 88 (long term support) and importing settings from edge ?

Hi, new to forums as never had any issues with FF ever until just now. I am completely taken aback at the way it all looks - which is horrid - and its not just that I am used to the last UI but it was close on perfect, especially with the colours. Its the main reason I stick with W7 as W10 is just too harsh for my eyes. Now FF has done the same?

I understand the need for constant updates for security but read the release notes and it really doesn't convey how the whole pages are now rendered.

I really hope this can be addressed asap with a further upgrade? Will have to look elsewhere otherwise...

I created this theme on yesterday for another FF89 user. Feel free to give it go. My suggestion is to go the site at below link. Next right click on toolbar > customize toolabar > theme selector > Turn browser "white". Next swithc back to websiet and apply the theme:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/dbbenroseysky/

I've made other changes too, like restoring icons in the options drop down. But still working on best way to provide the necessary files for people (all over the world)  :-)

We're with the OP. We hate 89. We don't have multiple devices and we don't have mobile devices and there are millions more like us. Thanks for discriminating against us and for giving us a horrid update. We're going elsewhere.
