Updated today to Thunderbird V102 - After update Tbird would not retrieve email, would not remember passwords. Works OK in Safe Mode. Have uninstalled or disabled all add ons permanently. Still only works in safe mode. View saved passwords they are all there in safe mode but do not appear in normal mode. I have tried all the methods for Tbird not saving passwords.

I keep starting in safe mode as it is the only way I can use Thunderbird after update to 102. I have multiple accounts and only use POP.

Maybe next update will fix it. Thanks

In Windows normal mode - Tbird in normal mode cannot send or receive emails. I have multiple accounts and profile is stored on network for access from either of my PCs. Tbird in troubleshoot mode works OK on one ISP can receive from both ISPs but only send on one. Sending screen just sits there. In Windows safe mode - Tbird in normal mode can receive from both ISPs but only send on one. In Windows safe mode - Tbird in troubleshoot mode works OK on one ISP can receive from both ISPs but only send on one. same as in normal Windows mode.

Server settings are the same as prior to V102 update Thunderbird is installed on both PCs and pointed to profile stored on NAS. Only one PC can access at a time. Thunderbird updated on both PCs to V102. Both PCs have same problem. I am contemplating creating new profile and copying data across to new profile.

Win 10 in safe mode with networking; TB works OK with normal TB start

Today - Checked that Windows defender was not blocking TBird or parts thereof. Checked that TBird was allowed through Windows firewall and finally ran Windows compatibility test which reported that TBird was an Incompatible Program. I will keep running it in Troubleshooting mode until next TBird update.

Same problem. After update to 102 TB is not showing or saving the password (PW-Store is empty). When starting in save-mode everything works fine.

I tried to create a new profile and imported my "old" profile -> TB is working fine in normal mode After automatic update to 102.0.1 same problem again.

I jused same solution (new profile and import old) -> TB works fine in normal mode

Yesterday automatic update to 102.0.2 -> same failure again (it starts to get boring)..... Now I will wait a while to give mozilla time to find a solution.

Thanks in advance for finding a working solution.

I have changed the target in my desktop short cut to "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -safe-mode This ensures I always start in safe mode (Troubleshooting Mode)

See if you have files not saving.

  • 'Menu app icon' > 'Settings' > 'Privacy & Security '

You discover passwords and cookies are not being saved then do this:

  • Menu app icon > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • Under 'Application Basics' - Profile Folder - click on 'Open Folder'

This opens a new window showing the contents of your current in use profile name folder.

  • Exit Thunderbird now - this is important.

Look for the following files and delete them.

  • cert8.db - obselete file
  • key3.db - obselete file
  • pkcs11.txt (some people report this file missing which will cause a problem)
  • secmod.db - obselete file
  • session.json
  • xulstore.json

Delete the files above - if no pkcs11.txt - delete all others, but report back and tell us if pkcs11.txt was missing. NOTE: Do NOT delete:

  • key4.db
  • cert9.db
  • logins.json

Start Thunderbird New pkcs11.txt, session.json, xulstore.json files will get created.

Retry entering password etc at prompt and make sure the checkbox is selected for Remembering Password.

Hi Toad-Hall, - cert8.db -> not in Folder - key3.db -> not in Folder - pkcs11.txt -> deleted - secmod.db -> not in Folder - session.json -> deleted - xulstore.json -> deleted

After starting TB, requester for entering PW appears. -> PW entered and checkbox for saving PW selected

Nothing happend.

When opening the PW-store/vault -> no entries

Closed TB and restarted in save mode: PW-requester appears, -> PW entered and checkbox for saving PW selected Connected to mail-provider When opening the PW-store/vault -> provider, login and PW are saved Closed TB and restarted in save-mode again -> Connection to mail-provider established

Closed TB and started in normal mode PW-requester appears When opening the PW-store/vault -> no entries visible

Closed TB and restarted in save-mode again -> Connection to mail-provider established When opening the PW-store/vault -> provider, login and PW are still there (without reentering)

For me it looks like TB is not able to read the PW-store/vault after updating to a new version (102, 102.0.1, 102.0.2) -> as I metioned before: it worked after creating a new profile and importing data from the old one (until to the next update)

In safe mode everything works fine

Maybe the "error window" can give a hint (after starting TB in normal mode, PW entered and nothing happens): 1657993906889 addons.xpi WARN Checking C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\distribution\extensions for addons Diese Seite befindet sich im Kompatibilitätsmodus (Quirks). Thanks for assistance. pkcs11.txt was in the profile. Tried all you suggestions but situation unchanged- did not have to worry about obsolete files as a few days ago I created a new profile and copied data across. Situation now. Profile is stored on NAS and accessed (one at a time only) by two PCs both running Win 10 21H1 and TBird 102.0.2

From main PC TBird normal start now is OK - user name and passwords retained but when writing mew message TBird does not suggest recipient address.

From second PC normal start - Tbird clears logins and password and cannot connect to mail servers at all. Starting TBird in safe mode retains passwords and settings (after they have been restored) but when writing new message TBird does not suggest recipient address.

For the moment I will keep running TBird in Safe-Mode on both PCs.

Thanks again

pleurisypeak As you have a new profile:

  • Menu app icon > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • Under 'Application Basics' - Profile Folder - click on 'Open Folder'

This opens a new window showing the contents of your current in use profile name folder.

  • Exit Thunderbird now - this is important.

  • session.json
  • xulstore.json

The not offering email addresses is because the auto is not working. Can you see all address books and contacts in the 'Address Book' ? This problem seems to be due to NAS. See info here - https://support.mozilla.org/gl/questions/1345770#answer-1433161

Thanks again for assisting. Tried your suggestions and had to re-enter manually all accounts and passwords. Situation unchanged. PC 1 New profile - Start TBird normal mode works OK except for auto fill on new message. Retains logins and passwords. PC 2 New profile - Start TBird normal mode loses passwords and settings and cannot connect to ISPs. Start safe mode (after restoring Profile from backup) works OK - Retains logins, settings and passwords but auto fill not working. Yes I can see all address books and contacts under tools address books. Address books are stored in the profile. I can write new message from the address book. No auto fill on new message from toolbar.

NAS is used as a file server and used to store the profile (Mapped network drive) so that same profile can be accessed by both PCs but not simultaneously. TBird is installed on each computer and the profile ini is pointed to the mapped drive. Has worked perfectly ever since I switched to TBird from Eudora so many years ago. Problems only began since V102. I checked error consol and only one error and a few warnings. Error is "services.settings: Failed to load last_modified.json: TypeError: NetworkError when attempting to fetch resource. I have looked for the file "last_modified.json" in the profile and it is not there, I also looked back over my past monthly storage back ups before V102 and it is not in any older profiles either, also no mention of it in "mozillaZine - Files and folders in the profile" I put a blank file of that name in a profile that I use for testing but the error still came up. So I do not understand error message but do not think that is the problem. My two PCs (one used by my financial controller aka partner) are different brands but running same version of windows and have TBird installed on each with profile ini pointed to the mapped network drive. Why they have different results with TBird I do not know, can only think it is a combination of Windows, Drivers and V102 as they worked perfectly for years.

Thanks

@pleurisypeak After hours of testing, I've found out that TB probaly has a problem to read/decrypt the PW-vault on shared devices. So I've created a new topic: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1383741

Thanks for your effort and the new topic. I turned off Hardware acceleration and all works as it should except Address Book export which will only export in vcf Cannot export ldif or csv. Export was OK before 102.0.3. Thanks again
