some websites I prefer to view in non-mobile format, however firefox automatically selects mobile for me. Is there an option to have firefox ask me, before navigating, as to which site (m. or non-m.) to choose?

Some sites will have a link to their non-mobile site. When there is not one you can install the Phony extension. That will provide a user agent option in the preferences. Set it to Desktop Firefox.
