wrong keyboard shortcuts due to nonstandard layout.

I use a non standard, non-QWERTY keyboard layout, based on Developer's Dvorak by Roland Kauffman (herefore "ddvorak"). Keyboard shortcuts appear to be messed up and I cannot figure out how to make them work. On a standard web page, hitting CTRL+C opens the bookmark library. Hitting CTRL+I (I is the button which gets the 'c' character under ddvorak) opens a lateral "search in bookmark" sidebar. Oddly enough, I can copy-paste with no problem from/to input field such as the one I'm using to write this.

I noticed that contestual menus don't have keyboard shortcuts even (but shortcuts are present in the "Edit" menu).

Any pointers?

Hi,

This is a known bug in Firefox. Please see the bug report here to view the conversation / work done so far:

In the bug a user called Zac mentions that he was able to work around the issue using Keyboard Layout Manager. However this was in 2010. See his post for more details.

I hope that helps.

Hello Eddyc, thank you for your quick reply. I am ashamed to see this bug has been known since 2008. The incoherent behaviour seems to suggest this problem is rooted in very deep plumbing and makes me think it won't be fixed anyway.

I'm not going to use the mentioned program. Besides, it's shareware and I'm not going to buy it.

I have come back to FF after a couple of years of using Chrome but I find this quite offensive. Makes me feel a 2nd class user. At this point, I think I will go back.

Mozilla are committed to supporting various keyboard layouts (e.g. Firefox OS supports dvorak keyboard out of the box) so any lapse in support is not intentional.

I am not sure of the details on why this bug has been open for so long but I'll try to do some digging for you and find out if, as you say, it is a deep plumbing issue.

Firefox is a collaborative effort between Mozilla employees, contributors, volunteers etc. If you are a developer yourself, and willing to get involved, then any input on this bug would be more than appreciated.

I hope this doesn't put you off using Firefox in the future. This may be an old bug but it is not marked as WONTFIX so it is likely that the work will be done for a future release.

Thanks

Thank you for your effort. I appreciate it. I'm going to try again six months from now.
