The visibility of the "New Tab" plus sign is very weak. Therefore, I routinely navigate away from my email homepage to browse, search, or load a bookmark. If the New Tab plus sign were customizable, I could make it more visible so that I would be reminded to click it for a new page.

The new tab button is customizable and can be dragged to another toolbar or position on the Tab bar in Customize mode. Then it becomes a toolbar button that looks different that may look better. You can also try to find a theme with a more distinct New Tab button.
