You can open the page in a tab and click the star on the Navigation Toolbar to bookmark the current tab. This will create a bookmark in the unsorted folder, so you need to click the blue highlighted star a second time to edit the bookmark and move the bookmark to another folder like the Bookmarks Toolbar. You can also drag the globe/padlock that you see at the left end of the location/address bar to the Bookmarks Toolbar.

One has nothing to do with the other. The homepage is your choice. As to your e-mail, you can create a bookmark for that.
