when I use Firefox, go to my e-mail, try to open an e-mail (which I can do) but if I try to open up something on an e-mail it bops me back to the inbox. It does not do this on Safari. macOS 10.13.3 Firefox 58. Ran virus scan, contacted Apple and they think it is a Firefox problem.

I filed a formal bug report this afternoon with the information about the "behavior" of Outlook in Firefox 58, but I can't tell what is going on under the covers so I don't know how quickly a fix can be released.
I don't know if Microsoft is aware of it. One of us could post on their forums. But it's after 6pm here and I hear the happy hour across the hall...

Do you use Outlook (Hotmail)? There is a new issue with Firefox 58:
Summary of the Problem
When you do not use the "Reading Pane", Outlook displays messages in front of the Inbox. There is some strange behavior with links and text that appear in front of text in the Inbox message list. It seems to start after the second or third message is opened (if you close between messages).
Areas of the message that are in front of sender name or subject line text in the Inbox do not react to the mouse; instead, it seems like the mouse is operating on the lower layer. So if you click in that area, Firefox will select the message under the mouse pointer in the Inbox instead of clicking text or a link in the message. It's really weird.
The mouse scroll wheel similarly appears to scroll the Inbox when the pointer is over those same problem areas, which is why when you click to try to move the focus into the message you may end up in the lower part of the list.
Workarounds
These are the ones I know of at the moment:
(1) If you have a wide display, you could try using the Reading pane on the right side of the Inbox.
(2) Switch to the Outlook beta layout by sliding the "Try the beta" switch that appears above the Inbox. You'll be able to switch back equally easily if you don't like it.
If you don't like the Reading pane or beta layout:
- When the problem appears, you can use Zoom to correct the mouse behavior (Ctrl+ or Ctrl+ or hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel; on Mac, try Command instead of Ctrl). This is only good until you close the message and open the next one, so works best in conjunction with the next workaround:
- To navigate the Inbox, open the first message you want to view, then use the up and down arrows above the message instead of closing and opening.
Obviously there will be times you need to close the message, so that only gets you so far.
jscher2000,
Thanks and yes I do use Outlook(Hotmail). I will try your ideas and thanks for your time on this.
Jeff
I also found that if I reload the page and quickly go back to the specific e-mail and try to open something inside of it it often works (reload page is at the top left side of the page, a twisted arrow)

That makes sense, and in some cases it could be faster. Hard to know without experimenting.
I wonder if Outlook and Firefox 58 are aware of this problem and if they are planning to fix it? I have used Hotmail for many years and never had this problem. Maybe downloading Firefox 58 was a mistake? My degree in Entomology makes it difficult for me. Too bad my computer doesn't have an exoskeleton!

Using a macOS, maybe it would be just as easy to learn the finer points of Safari. I tried the zoom in and out and think this is the best way. I also have learned if there is a problem, I will not see the finger pointing at what I am trying to open and then it's time for command zoom. Thanks again
