I cannot get Firefox to connect, whatever I do. I have tried changing to No Proxy, I have tried uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it. I have disabled my VPN and tried, and all to no avail. I just cannot get past the "Unable to find the proxy server" message.

Any help on this?

I am using an iMac, Late 2012, running Catalina V10.15.4

Hi,

Open Internet Options window. Uncheck Use a proxy server for your LAN option and click on OK to save changes.

Thank You.

Hi @chamodie1996

This is likely to sound very stupid, but I am searching through both Firefox and my Mac and cannot find any Internet Options window.

Can you clarify where to locate this?

Thanks in advance.

You can check the connection settings.

  • Options/Preferences -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

Hi @cor-el

That doesnt work. I have tried changing those settings and it doesnt change anything. Basically at the moment Firefox is completely un-useable, I cant even get to google with it.

maybe it's the proxy?

Its definitely the proxy! It cant find it.

Attached is a screen shot of my settings. I have tried all except a manual proxy, and none make any difference.

Hi @michi

With Safari, Chrome or Epic, I have no problems. But Firefox cannot connect to anything as it runs into the Grey Screen Of Death every time.

There are no blocks in the firewall that I can find where I would need to allow or configure access for Firefox either.

Hi cor-el,

Settings are No Proxy. Please note that I deleted Firefox, then downloaded the latest version and reinstalled it, hoping that would fix the issue, but theres no change.

See screen shot below for the setting taken just now:

I get the same result. Also if I choose Auto Detect Proxy Settings for this Network. I haven't tried the Manual Proxy settings though as I have no proxy that I need to use.

As background, this just happened, virtually overnight some time ago and I have been trying to figure out why ever since. I have googled for remedies and tried every setting, and have also uninstalled Firefox and downloaded a new version.

Nothing works, and I cannot trace why it should have gone from a working browser to a dead browser.

I guess I will just have to bin Firefox as it seems to have everyone stumped.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Hi @cor-el,

I am using a Mac. Of the links you have provided, I have Malwarebytes as it is also made for Mac, with a paid subscription. There is no rootkit, or virus. Everything else works except Firefox. Chrome works, Safari works, Edge works, but not Firefox.

It is a Firefox issue, not a virus.
